Always changing with the times is how Paul’s Markets will remain fresh for years to come

Born in 1927, Paul would rise early before school to tend fields where the family harvested and bunched radishes. In 1945, after graduating from St. Xavier High School, he started Paul’s Market to serve the Highlands neighborhood at 1006 Barrett Avenue with the help of other local farmers and a small loan from his father. He, and his new bride Jean, opened the original shotgun-style building with fresh produce on one side of the store and Lawrence’s Meats on the other.

In spite of the growth of supermarkets throughout the 1950s, Paul’s loyal Highlands neighborhood customers valued the commitment to service and fresh produce that became core characteristics for the stores. The market would thrive and grow its product offerings, including popular local and seasonal products. By 19XX, Paul’s would add the signature Coomes family- made gift baskets for holiday sales.

By the 1960s, Paul and Jean established an open-air market to serve the growing neighborhood of St. Matthews. The stores would add produce harvested from new warehouses constructed by Paul and his brother, Joseph. In addition to bibb lettuce, the warehouses would produce flowers and bedding plants from spring through fall starting Paul’s garden and outdoor sales.

Through the 70s, the second generation of the Thieneman family, Paul, Jr., would establish a generational legacy by opening and managing new stores in Middletown and Taylorsville Rd. to meet growing demand. Those locations prospered just like the other during the warm weather months while fruit and gourmet baskets sustained the markets throughout the winter holidays.

The 1980s were a decade of more generational growth as Paul’s son Phil, daughters Sally and Mary Hartman, brought their business experiences to the markets, The next generation would build the first year-round store on Brownsboro Rd. By the 90s all stores would serve their customers year-round.

Today, Paul’s Markets are synonymous with fresh fruit and produce, friendly service, neighborhood locations, and now a third-generation of leadership. As the largest-seller of Kentucky Proud products, they continue to channel Paul’s spirit by remaining open to new ideas and new ways to grow.

SUSTAINABILITY

A sustainable way of doing business

Some ideas are built to stand the test of time. “Sustainability” might just be a newfangled word for doing things the way we’ve always done them.

We source locally whenever it’s possible, because that’s the best way to get the freshest, most delicious produce. We don’t have a long supply chain. We shop daily, and our trucks deliver to the stores three times a day--that’s why our produce is always so fresh. Our more direct distribution process means sometimes corn literally goes from the field to the store in the same day.

Our sourcing process has been worked out over generations. It’s personal, and it’s just about perfect. We know which farmers to call at what time of year to make sure our produce arrives at the peak of perfection. When we can’t source locally, we buy as close to home as we can.

After more than sixty years, we don’t just believe offering the freshest food, thoughtfully sourced, is a sustainable way of doing business.

We’ve proven it.
